DECHEM

DECHEM

Product Design and Bochemian Glass

DECHEM studio was established in Prague in 2012 by Michaela Tomiskova and Jakub Jandourek, who first met at the Novy Bor School of Glass where they developed their passion for glass artistry. They have focused on product design, maintaining a special attention to glass, exploring traditional Bohemian craft techniques and the surprising connections of its various forms. The studio creates unique light fixtures, lighting objects and graceful, decorative items. The designers, however, advance all these traditional techniques through a thoroughly modern approach to design that places emphasis chiefly on grace and minimum shaping. DECHEM makes regularly appearances in renowned, professional magazines, has exhibited in Milan in the Rosanna Orlandi gallery and has taken part in the London Design Festival, for example. It is also a winner of the Czech Grand Design award.

Product Design and Ceramics

With ubiquitously applicable functionality or extraordinarily sophisticated, these examples are united by a subtle innovative approach and distinct reflection in the interior. Behind every visible result, there are several important steps: the turning point of the conscious idea, the test phase with its disappointments, but also the finding of new solutions for materials, mechanisms, technologies, shaping and ways of realization, the triumph of the new method, which brings out objects ready for long-term use and aesthetic pleasure. In the category we draw examples that give a glimpse at several main directions of development of the Bulgarian product design - furniture, utensils, home accessories and artistic objects with functional characteristics. We are impressed by the combination of imagination and its realization in unique forms through materials, craftsmanship and technology.

Graphic Design

Graphic design as a discipline makes life much easier, offering solutions for communication of all kind of content like product or service. The various fields of activity of the discipline characterize its vast application in print, online, advertising, culture, business, production etc. The reason for its fast expansion is the ability of graphic design to function easily as an instrument for problem solving. In this category we show case studies of successful visual campaigns for places and events with focuss on culture, because of the good examples and the progress in this field in Bulgaria during 2018. Our focuss on package design is important due to the growing impact on design on the product placement process. We are also daring a look beyond the traditional media of graphic design and elaborate on the fastly growing role of the discipline in interior design. It is interesting to highlight good examples for creating a good atmosphere and navigation in public space.

Fashion and Textile

Fashion is one of the most discussed disciplines in the field of design, because of its inherent lure, style and its ability to give freedom to self- expression. The inevitable need of clothing has turned the sphere into one of the biggest industries nowadays. This constitutes the leading position of the fashion industry in all kind of statistics in terms of environment pollution and low-wage labor. In this context it is important for us to highlight projects and designers who give artistic interpretations through their work on current topics, introduce innovation in textiles and don’t hesitate to question the common boundaries of the discipline and its business model. This happens always with attention to aesthetics and small details. Despite the small squale of the industry in Bulgaria, we witness big steps forward in terms of design and quality.

Jewellery

Design accent with a strong expression or a delicate addition to the personal style, jewellery pieces are a most important addition to the rich palette of visual creative experiments today. Compact, portable and characteristic, the sphere of jewelry design is not subject to a specific trend or meaningful constraints. The selected works impress with their interesting mix of materials and interpretations of stories, redefinition of functional or out-of-use objects, rearrangement of natural elements, new shaping inspired by a specific garment as well as light wearable sculptures. In Bulgaria, this sphere is highly developed, rich in tradition and constantly fueled by new talent because of the authors' ability to create compact editions and try different ways to reach customers.

Social Design

The category highlights the ability of design to be an agent of change improving the environment, providing a moment of peace, enjoyment, and intellectual enrichment, as well as provoking reflection on the validity of commonly accepted norms. The examples in the exhibition embody the noble gesture of designers and multidisciplinary teams to build a better quality lifestyle through their valuable interventions. The urban furniture displaying a poem, the beautiful square space with a sea view, the clear city navigation, the temporary intervention to attract attention, the reformatted learning environment - they are a generous gesture of humanity, love and dedication to the betterment of society. They recall how design captures important issues and helps solve them by using stylish and active visual solutions, unexpected intellectual provocations, humor, or just the magic of what's already there.
