Panik/Kalm

Panik/Kalm is a type family for editorial design, inspired by the art of punchcutting. The idea stemmed from an exploration of how the techniques and approaches used in punch cutting can be used as an experimental tool to create new lettershapes. An interesting and intensive process of carving punches in soap, coding, sketching and calligraphy brought him to the idea of drawing upright letters with back-slanted counters.

This resulted in unconventional weight distribution and bizarre shapes, which he implemented in the Panik styles, those being the Display part of the family. Currently, there are Roman, Italic and Light styles. The character of those styles is tamed into the Kalm Roman and Italic styles, which are meant to be used for long text reading. A side quest is the Multiline style, which is also inspired by the counterpunch methods but is mainly a coding challenge.
