A$AP SANS is a 4-hour workshop in which Polish graphic designer Mateusz Machalski will present the basic principles of working on a geometric sans-serif (LATIN) typeface – its anatomy, rules of working with Bézier curves and his own solutions to improve work.

Participants in the workshop will try to prepare a practically full set of basic glyphs (A-Z, a-z) for geometric sans. Participants could use Illustrator, Glyphs or any other vector design program. In this workshop students will learn the rules of creating a typeface from sketch to final draw. The class is suitable for typography students, as well as apprentice designers in advertising and branding agencies.

Mateusz Machalski (1989) is a graphic designer from Poland, author of over 40 font families, numerous corporate and multi-script typefaces and over 150 visual identities of companies, institutions and events. After graduating in 2014 from the Faculty of Graphic Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw with a Rector’s Honor, he focused on creating visual identities and typefaces. In 2019 he was awarded as Designer of the Year by the Polish Graphic Design Awards. He is a co-author of TYPOTEKA.PL, the Polish typography index and coordinates numerous exhibitions and cultural events. He is a member of the board of the Association of Applied Graphic Designers, the programme board of the International Poster Biennale and the International Typography Association. He is the author of the Bona Nova project to digitise the Bona typeface, introduced in 1971 by the famous designer and creator of Polish banknotes, Andrzej Heidrich.

In addition to his design work, Mateusz revives typefaces and conducts research projects, seminars and lectures in Poland and abroad. He is the recipient of a scholarship from the Minister of Science and Higher Education for outstanding young scholars and the Young Poland Scholarship of the National Cultural Centre. He is author of numerous publications on graphic design, visual culture and typography.
