The MELBA SCHOOL series continues with a fourth educational class on Inclusive Design: beyond making products beautiful, led by Ivelina Gadzheva, an inclusive design specialist from the independent educational platform Know-How-Show-How.

The class is suitable for product and interior designers, architects, engineers, innovation professionals or those interested in design thinking. Participants will understand what causes disconnection in design processes and explore their personal creative approaches. They will also look closely at their practice and seek answers to questions such as:

  • Through what perspective do I see the world?
  • Who am I excluding from what I do?
  • Can I be more responsible in my practice and what does that mean?

Inclusive Design: beyond making products beautiful will take place on November 11. and 12. at JAMBA (Lozenets district, 50 Buntovnik Street).

PROGRAM | 11. November (Friday) | 10:00-16:00 and 12. November (Saturday) | 10:00-13:00

The class includes a combination of presentations, creative activities and discussions. Participants get a hands-on introduction to the specifics of inclusive design and the principles of how to do an initial accessibility assessment of an everyday product or service.


  • You will develop your understanding of the human diversity-centered design process and apply it to a real case study that you will explore during the training;
  • You will learn what inclusive and exclusive design is through examples, case studies and group activities;
  • What is inclusive design/design for all/universal design?
  • How personal biases hinder or help the design process;
  • How to incorporate empathy into your practice;
  • How to create products with positive social impact.

Ivelina Gadzheva is an inclusive design specialist with extensive experience in training professionals, businesses and NGOs on how to use inclusive design methods for social innovation and business transformation. She is the founder of the Design for all Bulgaria Foundation (part of the Design for all Europe network), co-founder of the Service Design Bulgaria Chapter (accredited member of the Global Service Design Network). For the last four years Ivelina has been working as a researcher in the field of inclusive design at the Royal College of Art in London. Her mission is to teach and inspire others to use their potential to create conditions for social inclusion and develop sustainable solutions.

In 2022 MELBA DESIGN INITIATIVES launched MELBA SCHOOL – a series of educational classes that aim to encourage professional development and creative thinking. The classes are led by established designers and visual artists whose work contributes not only to the development of their discipline, but also to society.
