Zahari Radev

Zahari Radev is the founder and driving force behind the Bulgarian brand Razgar, whose origins date back to the 1970s when his great-grandfather invented a prototype grill-barbecue using an old metal drawer. Today, Zahari has perfected the design into a mobile grill with a stylish look, successfully combining functionality and aesthetics.

The success of his first product in 2019 led to the brand’s expansion in the following years, offering a complete range of camping equipment. The Razgar fire pit grill was followed by several other skillfully designed signature products, including a coffee maker, a beer crate, and mountain sculptures. Zahari Radev is one of Bulgaria’s most successful industrial designers, and his brand Razgar has become a key reference point for designer camping gear, accessories, and apparel in Bulgaria.

Type Forward

Type Forward is an independent type foundry founded by Stan Partalev and Mirela Belova. We began our careers in various visual arts fields and gradually became fascinated with typography and type design. As we collaborated on multiple projects, we quickly discovered how well our skills complemented each other, making our partnership seamless and intuitive. We found a perfect balance, with one of us contributing a more creative perspective and the other a technical direction. This synergy propelled us to establish Type Forward and delve into our shared vision of type design.

At Type Forward, our emphasis is on developing high-quality, practical typefaces. We meticulously attend to every detail, ensuring that each letter is thoughtfully designed and harmoniously integrated into the complex framework of a type family. Our typefaces embody deliberate design decisions that harmonize aesthetic appeal and practical functionality.

DESIGN IS: an element without which the world could exist but could not evolve.

Stan Partalev and Mirela Belova / Type Forward
Stan Partalev and Mirela Belova / Type Forward

Mirela Belova: I began my career as a graphic designer, where I enjoyed blending logic with creativity. However, a typography workshop eight years ago truly ignited my passion for type design. Designing a typeface is a complex process that requires each element to harmonize aesthetically and logically. I relish uncovering the principles that govern letter interactions and optimizing the design process for efficiency and structure.

Stan Partalev: I am the more expressive of the two, aka the problem creator. The technical stuff scares me a lot, and I’m always ready to take a non-technical and rather visual approach to a problem. Type design is a time-consuming exercise that requires patience and consistency. What draws me to type design is the expressiveness I can impart on a typeface, making it not just functional but also soft, friendly, easy-going, sharp, official, elegant, or anything else I might decide.

Max Pirsky

“Where are you from?” is a question I have a hard time answering. I’ve lived in 5 different countries, and a few years ago I ended up in Berlin, where I’m currently based. My whole life I’ve been fascinated with letterforms. I started with graffiti as a teenager, and that eventually turned into a career in graphic design which has been ongoing for the past 12+ years. I’ve worked all across the board from solving UX problems to designing visual identity systems and art directing campaigns for clients such as Google, Nike, Asics and Rimowa. Most recently, I was heading a brand design team of over 40 people at Revolut. I’m passionate about type, posters and visual experiments, which I often explore both in and outside of client work. When I’m away from the screen, I spend my time cooking, snowboarding and surfing.

DESIGN is: a way of thinking.

ESNAF TOYS

ESNAF TOYS are handmade wooden magnetic toys for children and adults. Founded by architects and partners in life Anastas Marchev and Bistra Popova (Archabits studio), the toys are distinguished by their minimalist design and the eco-friendly, sustainable materials. In this case, sustainability is not just about the materials, but also about the overall concept. ESNAF TOYS are durable over time with the idea of several generations playing with them.

Starting in 2013 in a small garage in Plovdiv, where Anastas learned the intricacies of woodworking with the help of his father and designed the first toys as a hobby for his son, today the family studio has a global partner network of 40 stores selling its products. Customers are scattered all over the world. ESNAF TOYS is also part of the Life on the Edge exhibition, which travels to museums across the United States and is supported by NASA. The exhibit is about different natural environments on Earth and in space where children create their own creatures to survive certain conditions.

Each animal from the ESNAF TOYS collections is a set of wooden parts with embedded magnets in bright colors, allowing anyone to easily assemble the individual parts into a figure. The collections are applicable for children’s games, playing on the go, learning about animals and even as home decoration. The materials are regional, the wood is not varnished or polished, and the magnets are painted with eco-friendly colors, offering a whole new play experience. “If you match the colours, you can create animals, but if you mix them, you get a whole new game, and the imagination can create endlessly…”, says Bistra.

DESIGN IS: art that combines aesthetics, concept and functionality. They defend their existence as original and timeless.

E.T.I.K.A.

E.T.I.K.A. is a young Bulgarian brand that interwines unique design, sustainable approach and social empathy. Behind their woolen funky jumpers stands the duo Nadezhda Sucheva (architect) and Sara Angelova (psychologist), whose common passion is fashion.

Apart from impressing with their unique geometric shapes, the jumpers are made from single pieces of natural yarn found online or in second-hand stores, designed by Nadezhda Sucheva. The concept of the brand is to involve seniors in knitting jumpers from recycled yarn. The sweaters are knitted by hand by grandmothers or women who have time and need an extra monthly payment.

DESIGN IS: that perfect and organic meeting that connects aesthetics with function, intuition with reason, idea (the invisible) with execution (the tangible).

Stiliyana Minkovska

Stiliyana Minkovska is a qualified architect (ARB/RIBA) and a female-centred healthcare designer, who practises across the wide intercourses of art, architectural, interior, product design, making and design research. Her work focuses on transforming health services through research and design. Creating a more human and supportive environment in maternity wards and birth centres is a topic that excites Styliana as a professional and as a young mother of two. She received an MA Architecture degree from the Royal College of Art in 2016. Her thesis project focused on pregnancy and childbirth led her to the Design Museum in London, where she was offered the opportunity to be one of four designers in residence for 2019. There she created the Ultima Thule birthing furniture triptych, an alternative to the traditional delivery room, a space designed to make the experience for mother and child more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Most recently, Stiliyana graduated with MRes in Healthcare & Design with the Royal College of Art & Imperial College London in June 2022 and her personal project developed during the course was awarded with distinction. In the same year one of her thesis projects (about rethinking speculum) became a startup, thanks to which she was able to further develop her idea and win funding that will see her working on a functioning prototype of a medical technology in 2023 that has the potential to change the world of gynecology and women’s experiences during procedures such as pap smears, colonoscopies and more. Matrix is a digitally-enabled speculum designed for stand-alone use – a radical and pioneering product that places patient experience and clinical learning at the forefront of design and manufacture.

Styliana also works actively as a service designer with the UK National Health System (NHS). She is a representative for an organisation supporting women and parents affected by the healthcare system during the perinatal period.

DESIGN is... a multicultural language. A language that everyone can speak and understand. Design is my way to communicate.

The surface of the modules is smooth and without visible structural parts, which gives the freedom to play with different colors and styles. All together they are looking for technical solution for an easily assembling exhibition stall for the company Roo’bar, and than was born the first prototype of Wallstack. Radina Popova (specialist in business and marketing ) joins the team.  The result of this stall was more than satisfying and the team decides to make a serial production. Petar Zaharinov

By education Petar Zaharinov is an architect, but his vocation appears to be in the product design. He strives to find solutions to seemingly impossible geometric and mechanical constructions and to apply them to objects of practical value, led by the model “Function follows form”. He is also the main engine behind two successful brands. The Tape Flips project is a combination of recycled cardboard and tape which can be transformed into a variety of furniture. PRAKTIK is a joint project with software developer Deyan Spasov, inspired by the puzzle, in which the furniture is assembled without tools, screws, nails or glue, and the results obtained depend entirely on the imagination of the user.

DESIGN IS: above all a higher degree of freedom of expression in comparison with architecture, lacking all the complexity of the environment, as well as the technical and financial challenges.

AWARDS AND PARTICIPATIONS:

Platinum A’Design Award , Young Balkan Designers, Salone del Mobile Milano, IMM Cologne, Helsinki: World Design Capital, One Design Week.

To develop her projects successfully, she relies on her ongoing relationships with other artists, jewelers and gallerists.
